Caterers Thank Mahama for Increasing School feeding from ¢1.50 to ¢2.00 But Want More
The School Feeding Caterers Association has expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for approving an increase in the feeding grant for basic school students, raising it from GHC 1.50 to GHC 2.00.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson made the announcement during an X-space discussion on March 9, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving the school feeding program.
The association has long advocated for an increment, acknowledging that while GHC 2.00 remains inadequate, they are prepared to manage with the new rate.
National President of the association, Nana Otu Sakyi-Amo Twafohene, welcomed the news, expressing optimism that Junior High Schools would also be included in future adjustments. He emphasized the importance of sustaining the school feeding program, noting that increasing the per-child allocation is a crucial step.
In a related development, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, revealed during her vetting that the NDC government intends to expand the program to private schools. She reassured the public of President Mahama’s dedication to not only continuing the initiative but also enhancing the quality of meals provided.
According to the minister-designate, the NDC manifesto outlines strategies to resolve challenges related to school feeding and capitation grants. Addressing the Appointments Committee on January 22, she noted that while approximately 40 days of payments have been processed, 31 days remain outstanding.
The proposed expansion and increased funding mark a significant step in strengthening the program’s impact on schoolchildren across the country.
