The award-winning artist took to social media to express mixed feelings about the currency shift, jokingly asking former President John Dramani Mahama to “slow down” as his dollar savings lose value.
In a playful yet reflective post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the 2020 Telecel Ghana Music Awards Artist of the Year commented on how the strengthening cedi is eating away at his U.S. dollar reserves. While many have welcomed the cedi’s improved performance, Kuami Eugene’s light-hearted message captured the concerns of individuals and investors who hold assets in foreign currency.
Since the start of April, the cedi has seen a sharp appreciation—moving from around GH₵15 per dollar to approximately GH₵10 per dollar, sparking varied reactions from economic observers, business owners, and the Ghanaian diaspora. For those with dollar-denominated funds, the rapid gain means a notable reduction in the value of their holdings when converted back to local currency.
