Cement Hits GHC130: Ghanaians Rage Over Skyrocketing Prices!

Ghana is currently grappling with a cement price shock, as the cost of a 50kg bag has surged from GHC85 in January 2025 to GHC130 by April — a staggering GHC45 rise in just four months. The development has left many citizens angry and worried about the immediate and long-term implications.

This dramatic jump is particularly jarring when compared to the cement price trend under the previous administration. Between 2016 and 2024, during the New Patriotic Party’s tenure, cement prices rose by GHC55 — but over a span of eight years.

Under the new government, however, nearly the same increase has happened in a fraction of the time.

Construction workers, homeowners, and developers across major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, Tamale, and Takoradi are feeling the heat.

For many, completing building projects has now become a distant dream. The scarcity of cement in some regions has forced buyers to go from store to store, hoping to find a bag — and even then, they have to pay inflated prices.

The situation is being blamed on a mix of import difficulties, production setbacks, and broken supply chains. But the harshest criticism is being directed at the government.

Many citizens are venting their frustrations on social media, accusing leadership of failing to stabilize the economy and shield ordinary people from rising costs.

With cement becoming both expensive and scarce, many ongoing building projects have ground to a halt. There are fears that this will push up rent prices and housing costs even further, worsening the affordability crisis already faced by many young Ghanaians.

Although government authorities have yet to release a formal statement, reports suggest that internal discussions are underway to resolve the crisis. Until a clear solution is presented, the public outcry is expected to intensify as Ghanaians demand answers and relief.
