Dr. Jane Ansah has achieved a historic milestone in her career, being elected Vice President of Malawi following the 2025 general elections. She ran as the running mate to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika under the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, securing a decisive 56.8% of the popular vote.
Born on October 11, 1955, Dr. Ansah is a distinguished lawyer and legal scholar. She served as a High Court judge from 1998, later becoming Malawi’s first female Attorney General from 2006 to 2011. She also served on the Supreme Court of Appeal beginning in 2011.
Between 2016 and 2020, Dr. Ansah chaired the Malawi Electoral Commission, resigning after courts confirmed irregularities in the 2019 election, which led to the ordering of fresh presidential elections.
Dr. Ansah is only the second woman in Malawi’s history to hold such a high office, following former president and vice president Dr. Joyce Banda.
A highly respected legal expert, Dr. Ansah has over 40 years of experience in Malawi’s justice system and became a lawyer in 1978. Her academic achievements are equally impressive:
- LLB from the University of Malawi
- Master’s degree and PhD in International Human Rights Law from the University of Nottingham, UK
She remains the first and only female judge in Malawi with a PhD, known for her firm yet fair judgments, and has inspired countless lawyers across the country.
Dr. Ansah is married to Bishop Dr. Joseph Addo Ansah, with whom she has shared 42 years of marriage, cementing her legacy as both a legal and personal role model.
