Authorities in Ghana have sentenced two Nigerian women to a combined 18 years in prison over their involvement in a cross-border operation allegedly linked to the trafficking and exploitation of young Nigerian women.
According to details reaching news sources, the two women were accused of luring attractive young women from Nigeria into Ghana under false pretenses, only to force them into sex work upon arrival.
The scheme, widely seen as part of an underground hookup network, was reportedly uncovered after an investigation revealed that many of the girls brought into Ghana were not willing participants but victims of manipulation and coercion.
Both suspects have now been handed nine-year jail terms each, following their conviction. Authorities say the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense and serves as a deterrent to others involved in similar exploitative activities.
The case has sparked concern over the growing trend of human trafficking under the guise of the so-called “hookup business,” with calls for tighter cross-border monitoring and stronger protection for vulnerable women.
