The Ghana Navy have began search and rescue operation at sea

The Ghana Navy, supported by the Ghana Air Force, has launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation at sea, about 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

The operation follows an attack on more than 50 Ghanaian fishermen by armed men at sea near Senya Bereku.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Director-General of Public Relations, Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, the operation, which began at dawn, was necessitated after armed assailants reportedly seized fishing equipment and fired warning shots, leaving dozens of fishermen stranded offshore.

“The Ghana Navy, supported by the Ghana Air Force, has been conducting a Search and Rescue Operation since dawn at sea, 35 nautical miles off the coast of Senya Bereku in the Central Region. This follows an attack on some fishing vessels in the general area,” portions of the statement read.

The statement added that the operation is ongoing and urged the public to remain calm, assuring that further updates will be communicated as they become available.

“The operation is ongoing, and the Ghana Armed Forces appeals to all to remain calm. Further details will be communicated,” the statement added.

Reports indicate that the gunmen, suspected to be pirates, fired warning shots, held the victims at gunpoint, and made away with seven outboard motors, generators, and other valuables.

The incident is said to have occurred during a night fishing expedition, leaving more than 50 fishermen stranded at sea after their equipment was seized.

Reports further indicate that the attackers stormed the fishing grounds under the cover of darkness, brandishing guns and other weapons.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants held the fishermen at gunpoint for some time and fired several warning shots before carrying out the robbery.
