Ghanaian Star Kwaisey Pee Opens Up About Starving as a Child

Popular Ghanaian highlife musician Kwaisey Pee has revealed the heartbreaking realities of his early life, shedding light on the severe challenges he faced long before fame found him.

Born Akwasi Opoku, the celebrated artiste shared that his childhood was riddled with hardship and emotional isolation. The difficulties began early—his mother reportedly left his father when he was just three months old, leaving him to grow up without maternal care.

Raised by his father, the legendary Agyaaku of the Yamoah & Sunsum Mystics Band, Kwaisey Pee explained that his father’s constant travels due to his musical career meant he had to live with different guardians throughout his childhood. While some offered kindness and support, others treated him poorly, often leaving him to fend for himself.

Among the most painful memories he recalled was going to bed on an empty stomach multiple times. He shared that his hunger once drove him to eat a half-eaten piece of roasted corn he found on the ground, which chickens had already pecked at—just to fill his stomach enough to sleep.

Now a well-established name in Ghana’s music industry, Kwaisey Pee has risen from these humble beginnings to become one of highlife’s most respected voices. With over 20 years in the business, several albums, and timeless tracks such as Ankonam Yaa, Me Hia Odo, and Ku Me Preko, his story is a powerful reminder that even greatness can emerge from struggle.
