Ghanaian gospel musician Great Ampong has issued an apology to former President John Dramani Mahama for remarks made in a song he composed in support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Ahead of the 2024 general elections, Ampong, a known supporter of the NPP, released a campaign song endorsing the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO).
The song praised the NPP’s achievements and urged voters to support them at the polls.
At the time, Ampong dismissed claims that he had been paid a large sum of money by Dr Bawumia to campaign for him.
He insisted that his endorsement was purely based on his belief that the NPP had contributed more to Ghana’s development than the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, following the NDC’s victory in the elections, the musician has sought to clarify his stance.
In a recent interview, he apologised to John Mahama, explaining that his comments had been misunderstood and misinterpreted. His apology comes amid heightened political tensions, with some NPP supporters concerned about the implications of the election outcome.
