Residents and businesses across the Volta, Oti, and Tema Regions were without electricity on Thursday,  April 23, 2026, following a combination of a technical challenge from GRIDCo and multiple network faults that left scores of communities without power.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) confirmed that the outage affecting large swathes of the Volta and Oti Regions was due to a technical challenge from GRIDCo on the line at the Asiekpe Bulk Supply Point. Affected areas include Ho, Kpeve, Tsito, Kpando, Hohoe, Kadjebi, Jasikan, Nkwanta, Dambai, and their surrounding communities.

In a statement, the ECG noted that power supply would be restored immediately once GRIDCo rectifies the situation. The company deeply regretted the inconvenience caused by the technical challenge.

Transformer fault compounds crisis

Separately, a transformer fault in the Tema Region disrupted power to an extensive list of communities, including Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Akrade, Senchi, Atimpoku, Asutsuare, Golden Exotics, Volivo, Osuwem, the Commandos Military Training Camp, Juapong, Akwamufie, Frankadua, Nudu, Kisifui, Apeguso, Volo, Anum, Boso, and surrounding areas.

The ECG assured affected customers that engineers were working assiduously to rectify the fault and restore supply.

Upstream challenge hits Tema Region

Adding to the woes, the ECG also reported an upstream challenge affecting parts of the Tema Region on Thursday. The company stated that engineers were standing by to restore supply as soon as the challenge is rectified, though no specific timeline was provided.

Multiple regions affected

The simultaneous disruptions across three regions left residents and businesses grappling with uncertainty, with many forced to rely on generators or simply endure the inconvenience. The affected areas span a wide geographical belt from the southern industrial hubs to the northern parts of the Volta Region.

The ECG has urged customers to remain calm as engineers work to resolve the various challenges. Further updates are expected as restoration efforts continue.
