Ghanaian rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, better known as Guru, has had his disqualification from the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) presidential election overturned, giving him another chance in the race.
Initially, the SRC had disqualified Guru, claiming he did not fulfill the necessary criteria to run for office. Despite the Judicial Board’s initial support of this decision, the Vice Dean intervened, instructing that Guru, along with Emmanuel Amponsah and their running mates, be reinstated on the list of presidential candidates.
The Vice Dean’s directive mandated that all candidates, including Guru, participate in the balloting process scheduled for Monday, September 16, 2024, at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs (ODSA).
This balloting would determine the order in which candidates’ names appear on the ballot. Additionally, the Electoral Commission was instructed to provide the final list of candidates to the University of Ghana’s Computer Services to ensure the voting process could proceed smoothly.
The disqualification saga began when the SRC’s Electoral Commission barred Guru, citing a residency rule in the SRC’s constitution.
According to the rules, candidates for executive positions are required to have lived in one of the university’s halls, a requirement Guru was said not to have met.
Following this, Guru filed a petition, challenging the disqualification, which eventually led to the Vice Dean’s decision to overturn the ruling and allow his name to be included in the election process.
The letter further indicated that the voting would take place on a mutually agreed date, no later than Wednesday, September 18, 2024.
This marks a significant development in Guru’s attempt to become SRC president and demonstrates the dynamic nature of student politics at the University of Ghana.
