Hawker Imprisoned for Months After Alleged Forced Confession By Police

A Nigerian lawyer has brought to light the case of an 18-year-old girl who has been imprisoned for months after allegedly being forced by the police to confess to armed robbery.

The girl, identified as EUO, was arrested in August 2024 while hawking agidi.

She was detained alongside three older men, aged 45 to 49, all accused of armed robbery.

According to the lawyer, the police subjected her to severe torture, including hanging her upside down and burning her with a lighter, until she admitted to a crime she did not commit.

One of the co-accused, who refused to confess, reportedly died due to the torture inflicted on him at the police station.

Despite her innocence, EUO has remained in detention as the police demanded ₦150,000 for her release—an amount her family could not afford.

Disturbingly, her relatives have no idea where she is, as the police allegedly denied her any contact with them.

The lawyer, who encountered her while offering free legal aid at a correctional facility, has taken up her case pro bono.
