Hopeson Adorye, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and now affiliated with the Movement for Change, has shed light on the resignation of Samuel Dubik Mahama, the former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
According to Adorye, intense political pressure forced Mahama to step down from his role.
In an interview, Adorye revealed that the government placed unreasonable financial demands on the ECG to support its political campaign ahead of the upcoming elections.
He explained that Mahama was under significant strain from the NPP, not only to manage the company’s existing debt to contractors but also to meet these financial requests.
Adorye emphasized that these pressures were unrealistic, considering ECG’s financial situation, which was already burdened by unpaid debts to contractors.
The government, he claimed, expected Mahama to resolve these issues while also raising funds for the party’s political ambitions.
The former NPP member also blamed the government’s mismanagement for the increase in electricity tariffs, explaining that the decision to raise costs was driven by the need to address ECG’s mounting debts.
However, Adorye stated that the government also expected Mahama to fulfill its financial demands for campaign funding, putting him in an untenable position.
Ultimately, Adorye asserted that Samuel Dubik Mahama chose to resign to preserve his integrity, as the conflicting pressures became too much to bear.
He added that Mahama’s decision was a result of his refusal to compromise his values for the sake of political interests.
“Samuel Dubik Mahama was under immense pressure from the NPP, not just to manage the debts owed to contractors, but also to make certain financial commitments for the party’s campaign. ”
“The government’s incompetence is to blame for the increase in tariffs. They created the debt and expected Mahama to clean it up while meeting their unreasonable financial expectations.”
“He refused to sacrifice his integrity, and that’s why he resigned.”
