The protracted delay by the government of Ghana in paying stipends has alarmed the Ghana Students Association in Hungary (GASH), negatively affecting the lives and academic endeavors of Ghanaian students enrolled in Hungarian universities.
The students expressed their dissatisfaction at the Ghanaian government’s inability to pay about 215 students’ monthly stipends during the previous six months.
The already difficult circumstances encountered by Ghanaian students studying abroad have been made worse by the fact that the stipends, notwithstanding the agreement between Ghana and Hungary, have not been paid.
The students’ situation is made worse by Hungary’s skyrocketing cost of living, even though the Hungarian government has upheld its end of the scholarship deal.
The Association claims to have written to various stakeholders in Ghana but to no avail. None have responded to their plea and they are left frustrated.
It can be recalled that last year Ghanaian students enrolled in the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in Hungary were having financial difficulties because their stipends had not been paid by the government of Ghana for eight months.
The students at the time claimed that some of their colleagues had been evicted for their inability to pay rent and some faced starvation.
History seems to be repeating itself.
