Koku Anyidoho Drops Bombshell on Atta Mills’ Refusal to Sack Chief Justice

On Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), took to X (formerly Twitter) with a cryptic revelation involving the late President John Evans Atta Mills and a past judicial controversy.

According to Anyidoho, during Mills’ presidency, there was considerable pressure from various quarters for the removal of then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood.

Petitions reportedly poured in urging action against her, but the late president consistently declined to act on them.

Though he made it clear that he personally heard what Mills said in response to the mounting pressure, Anyidoho chose not to share the details publicly.

He emphasized that certain conversations were best kept private and that he intends to carry that memory quietly, offering only his respect to the former president.

His statement has attracted attention not only for its historical value but also due to its timing.

It comes as Ghana’s current Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, faces suspension by President John Mahama after being accused of misconduct through multiple petitions. A formal committee has been set up to investigate the claims.

The situation has sparked debate among political observers, many of whom are drawing comparisons between how President Mills handled similar pressure during his tenure and President Mahama’s swift action in the current matter.

While Mills is being remembered for resisting political interference in the judiciary, Mahama’s decision has raised questions about executive influence on judicial independence.

Koku Anyidoho’s message adds a new layer to the national conversation on leadership, legacy, and how Ghana’s leaders navigate calls for judicial accountability.
