Ghanaian music sensation Kuami Eugene may be a household name in secular entertainment, but according to him, his foundation in ministry and the church remains unshaken.
In a recent conversation with Doreen Avio, the award-winning artist opened up about his musical origins, crediting the church for everything from his spiritual discipline to his musical skillset. Long before he became known as the “Rockstar,” he was simply Eugene Marfo, playing drums and keyboards in his local church while juggling school and music.
He revealed that his deep connection with gospel ministry has never faded, even as he now headlines concerts and fills playlists with afrobeat and highlife hits.
Reflecting on his early beginnings, Kuami Eugene shared how a life-changing invitation to a church event in the Volta Region helped push his career forward. Invited by a friend who was a pupil teacher at the time, he was asked to minister at a three-day convention. That appearance became his first-ever paid performance — a milestone that he still cherishes.
That pivotal experience helped set the stage for what would follow. Shortly afterward, he auditioned for MTN Hitmaker, where he earned national recognition by finishing third. His performance caught the attention of Lynx Entertainment, marking the start of a successful career in the mainstream music industry.
Despite his rise in secular circles, Kuami Eugene continues to attribute much of his journey to divine grace, unwavering family support, and the guidance of mentors such as Richie Mensah and Eric Goka. For him, fame hasn’t erased the values instilled in him by the church — it’s only magnified their importance.
