Parliament has confirmed that the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

In a brief statement posted on Facebook, Parliament said the matter had been brought to the attention of the House and that efforts were underway to obtain full details surrounding the incident.

The statement, signed by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, indicated that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House were engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague over the development.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the statement said.

Parliament noted that the Rt. Hon. Speaker and parliamentary leadership were in contact with Ghana’s mission in The Hague to gather detailed information on the circumstances of the detention.

The statement did not disclose the reasons for the detention, the duration of the MP’s stay in the Netherlands, or whether any formal charges had been preferred against him.

Authorities also did not indicate whether the lawmaker was travelling in an official or private capacity at the time of the incident.

Parliament assured the public that updates would be provided as soon as more information becomes available.

The development has triggered public interest, with many awaiting clarification from both Ghanaian diplomatic officials and Dutch authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the detention of the legislator at one of Europe’s busiest international airports.
