The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a free registration exercise for one million people as well as a waiver of the waiting period for newly enrolled members in May 2026.

Themed “The King’s Month”, the exercise will be conducted in the whole of May in honour of the birthday of the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

A delegation from the Authority, led by Lawrence Nii Okantey Adjetey, Board Chairman and Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, CEO, made this known formally to the Asantehene on April 22, 2026.

“Otumfuo is keen about the well-being of Asanteman and Ghanaians, so we intend to support the healthcare system with this initiative,” the CEO said in his submission.

He further expressed gratitude to Otumfuo for his unflinching support, advice, and blessings.

For his part, the Board Chairman praised Otumfuo.

“Otumfuo has represented the quality leadership that this nation aspires for. You are leading your people and making an impact in their lives.”

He expressed gratitude to Otumfuo for opening his doors at all times to the Authority.

He was hopeful that the initiative would further improve the NHI’s coverage.

The King underscored the relevance of the scheme in his speech as he emphasised how it assists in healthcare delivery to patients.

“The wealth of the nation depends on the health of the people. Not everyone can afford to pay, and so the scheme is very critical.”

The delegation further presented a branded shirt for the exercise to the Palace.

Otumfuo commended the Authority for expanding to cover chronic disease treatment as well as its prompt settlement of claims.

That said, His Majesty called for tightening of the revenue gaps to tackle manipulated claims.

On the subject of the free registration, Otumfuo said he would advocate for his courtiers to patronise.

His Majesty also plans to inspect the exercise within the Palace.

The delegation also included Dr Alhassan Iddrisu, Francisca Atuluk, Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Pious Kwame Nkuah and others
