A Kumasi High Court has handed down a historic 120-year prison sentence with hard labor, plus life imprisonment, to 36-year-old Dominic Afriyie (alias “GH”) for his role in a deadly 2021 armed robbery that claimed the life of a respected pharmacist.
Justice Abdul Razak delivered the landmark verdict on May 15 after a seven-member jury unanimously convicted Afriyie on charges of murder and two counts of aggravated robbery. The violent crime occurred on November 20, 2021, when the convict stormed the Atasemanso residence of 43-year-old Michael Dela Agbo Klu – a pharmacist and building contractor – executing him after stealing cash, electronics, and other valuables at gunpoint.
Key Details of the Case:
– Modus Operandi:Forced entry with firearms before fatal shooting
– Stolen Items: GH₵1,500 cash, ASUS Zenbook laptop, two mobile phones
– Subsequent Arrest: Captured with three accomplices during another planned robbery on December 31, 2021
– Evidence: Firearms recovered from their Toyota Corolla (AS 5970-20) matched ballistic evidence
Ashanti Regional Police PRO DSP Godwin Ahianyo hailed the conviction as a victory for justice, stating it reflects law enforcement’s resolve to combat violent crime. Forensic investigations confirmed Afriyie acted alone in Klu’s murder despite initially operating with a gang.
The stiff sentence – one of Ghana’s longest for a single perpetrator – sends a strong deterrent message amid rising concerns about armed robberies targeting business professionals. Court observers noted the punishment reflects the premeditated nature of the crime and its devastating impact on the victim’s family and community.
