Otumfuo Cancels Deal That Promised Stool for Funeral Money

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has issued a stern warning against the practice of using traditional stools as bargaining chips in financial deals, calling it a serious breach of custom.

During the Asanteman Council meeting on March 17, 2025, he reminded chiefs that all stools within his jurisdiction belong to him and cannot be traded for personal gain. Expressing his displeasure, he asked, “How could you pledge the stool in exchange for money?”

The controversy stemmed from a dispute in the Gyadam Traditional Area, where it emerged that kingmakers had allegedly promised the stool to a royal who financed the funeral of the late chief, Nana Ayim Kumnipa. The agreement was said to have been made in consultation with Queen Mother Nana Kwartemaa Mmorongo II.

The Queen Mother admitted that the royal family sought financial assistance for the burial but denied any arrangement to enstool the financier in return.

Otumfuo, ruling on the matter, found both parties guilty of violating custom. Declaring that their agreement was void, he firmly stated, “Your commitments hold no weight. They are null.”
