The Rebecca Foundation, a charity institution established by former First Lady, Rebecca Akuffo-Addo, has trained 21 women in employable skills to help secure their future.
Women aged 18 to 50 years, mostly single mothers, widows, or unemployed, were trained in a five-day batik tie-dye-making program in Accra.
Drawn from the Ga and Ga West Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Accra, they are to serve as trainers of trainers in their respective districts of the church, where they were selected, to ensure that more women in the same situation also become self-sufficient.
The Coordinator of the training, Sheela Sakyi Oppong, said the Rebecca Foundation aims to support women and their children by giving mothers skills so that they can take better care of their children.
She said the training was therefore aimed at cushioning women, especially mothers, into gainful employment and livelihoods so they could earn a living and take care of their children.
Self sufficient
The National Director, Development and Social Services of the Presbyterian Church, Rebecca Teiko Sabah, said two women each were selected from the Ga and Ga West districts of the church to participate in the training.
She said to ensure that the women became self-sufficient, her unit was also going to top-up their training with bookkeeping, savings, marketing and digital skills to ensure that they lived up to expectations.
The Ga West Presbytery Clark, Rev. Kennedy K. Asante Sarpong, called on the women to take their newly acquired skills seriously so that they would become profitable to them in future.
He said after the training, “The true test lies in how you apply the knowledge you have gained to your benefit”.
The CEO of EFYKLO Ventures, Afua Agyemang, who took the women through the five-day training, called on them to ensure that they worked with the skills they have acquired to ensure that they master them, saying, “The more you apply the skills gained, the more skilful you become.”
A participant, Jacklyn Jackson Davies, on behalf of her fellow trainees, thanked the Rebecca Foundation and the Presbyterian Church for the honour done to them.
She pledged that they would put their skills to good use to benefit all who needed their services within the church and beyond.
The trainees were presented with certificates of participation and start-up kits to help them establish themselves.
