Tensions flared in Somanya this morning as residents clashed with workers from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over what they described as exorbitant electricity bills. The confrontation erupted as frustrated residents gathered to protest outside the ECG office, demanding answers and relief from what they deemed to be unjust charges.
According to eyewitnesses, the situation quickly escalated as heated exchanges turned physical, with some residents attempting to block ECG workers from entering the premises. Riot police were called to the scene to restore order, and several individuals were reportedly injured during the altercation.
The root cause of the dispute appears to be the recent issuance of electricity bills that residents say are far higher than usual. Many claim to have received bills that are several times higher than their typical monthly expenses, despite no significant changes in their usage patterns.
Residents have voiced their frustration with what they perceive as unfair billing practices by the ECG, citing discrepancies in meter readings and a lack of transparency in billing procedures. Some have accused the utility company of exploiting its monopoly status to overcharge customers without justification.
Meanwhile, local authorities have called for calm and urged residents to refrain from resorting to violence in their quest for resolution.
