Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has narrated the rich history behind the establishment of the Antoa Stool, underscoring its crucial role within the Asante Kingdom.
The detailed account came before Nana Kwaku Ware III, new Antoahene, swore the oath of allegiance during a Kumasi Traditional Council gathering on 24 February 2025.
Otumfuo’s recount served to remind the new chief of the profound responsibility now resting on his shoulders.
Otumfuo explained that the Antoa Stool was created by Opemsuo Osei Tutu I as an expression of gratitude to Sarkodie Deteh, the first Antoahene. Sarkodie Deteh, a descendant of Ampoma—herself the daughter of Amoanim—played a decisive role during a period of leadership uncertainty in Kwamang.
When the Kwamang Stool became vacant, the Kenyaasehene, though approached, declined the opportunity, claiming he had to tend to his groundnut farm.
Amidst this leadership void, Sarkodie Deteh emerged as a key figure. Recognising the urgent need for capable leadership, he led a delegation to retrieve Opemsuo Osei Tutu I, who was residing in Akwamu after being sent to Denkyira for training. Sarkodie’s pivotal intervention enabled the enstoolment of Opemsuo as Kwamanhene and later as the first Asantehene.
Otumfuo stressed that without Sarkodie’s timely actions, the lineage occupying the Golden Stool today might have taken a different path.
In appreciation of Sarkodie Deteh’s contribution, Opemsuo Osei Tutu I established the Antoa Stool and further presented Sarkodie with portions of his royal regalia.
However, Opemsuo instructed that these regalia be used exclusively within Antoa, a directive that cemented the stool’s unique status.
Otumfuo pointed out that the Antoa Stool is among the four stools tied to Poduo, a special creation by Komfo Anokye. The other stools in this esteemed group include Adonteng, Bantama, and Bantama Baamu. This distinction underscores the Antoa Stool’s prominence within Asanteman’s traditional hierarchy.
Bringing his address to a close, Otumfuo tasked Nana Kwaku Ware III with the solemn duty of preserving the legacy of the Antoa Stool. His Majesty emphasised that the role demands unwavering integrity and commitment to safeguarding the customs and traditions associated with the stool. The charge serves as a reminder that stewardship of such a significant position requires dedication to the values that have defined it throughout history.
