A group of Ghanaian construction workers in Libya have meted out punishment to their colleague, Abodam, for stealing and selling two of their phones. Abodam, who claimed to be from Ejura, Ghana, allegedly stole the phones and sold them to fund his attempt to cross the sea to Italy with his Nigerian girlfriend.
However, his plan failed, and he lost the money. With no other option, he returned to his colleagues, who were furious with him. The group subjected Abodam to a series of punishments, exacting physical revenge for his actions.
Netizens have reacted with mixed emotions to the incident. Some have condemned the punishment, calling it excessive and urging the victim to report the incident to the authorities. “This is not right at last report him smh,” wrote one user.
Others have expressed sympathy for Abodam, acknowledging the desperation that drove him to steal. “Life hard oo Somebro ein father that oo, see how dem dey slap slap am. MAY WE ALL BE GREAT,” wrote another user.
Some have also used the opportunity to criticize Ghana’s economic situation, which they believe drives citizens to seek greener pastures abroad. “Imagine if Ghana’s economy was good… Who will go to Libya? Our leaders have failed us! Me saf… I dey study the Route to Libya,” wrote a user.
Others have offered words of encouragement to Abodam, urging him not to give up. “Sorry Abodam, better luck next time… Don’t give up, God will see you through bro,” wrote a user.
The incident has sparked a larger conversation about the challenges faced by migrant workers and the need for better economic opportunities in Ghana. “Pa sey I go enter Libya dey work, I go stay Ghana make kiddies throw stones at me apuu!!” wrote a user.
