Why KSM is Demanding the Renaming of Ghana’s Main Airport Kotoka
Renowned Ghanaian media personality and comedian, Kwaku Sintim-Misa, popularly known as KSM, has sparked nationwide conversation after calling on former President John Mahama to rename Ghana’s premier aviation hub, Kotoka International Airport.
KSM has described the airport’s current name as a “disgrace” to Ghana’s historical legacy.
He argued that the airport should instead bear the name of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, to properly reflect the country’s Pan-African ideals and the struggle for independence.
According to KSM, Nkrumah’s pioneering role in uniting Africa and leading Ghana to independence deserves more prominent recognition.
The comedian criticised the decision to name the airport after Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, the military figure who led the 1966 coup that toppled Nkrumah’s government. He questioned why a key national facility should honour a man whose actions disrupted Ghana’s democratic development and Pan-African ambitions.
KSM further alleged that Kotoka’s links to foreign interests undermined the nation’s sovereignty at a crucial period in its history.
In his view, renaming the airport after Nkrumah would not only correct a historical wrong but also serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s dedication to African unity and progress.
The suggestion has triggered widespread debate among Ghanaians, with some supporting the idea as a step toward restoring national pride, while others argue that such changes should be approached cautiously, considering their potential political implications.
As discussions continue, attention now turns to John Mahama and whether he will consider KSM’s call should he return to the presidency. The outcome of this debate could reshape how Ghana chooses to honour its past and define its future identity.
