Why Many Ghanaian Musicians Fail After Leaving Labels — D-Black Tells All

Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Desmond Blackmore, popularly known as D-Black, has shed light on why many artistes in Ghana find it difficult to succeed after parting ways with their record labels.

In a candid discussion with ZionFelix, D-Black drew on his personal experiences managing Black Avenue Muzik and working with artistes who have since left his label to explain this common challenge.

When questioned about the roles of labels like Black Avenue Muzik and Lynx Entertainment in these struggles, D-Black was quick to clarify that the problem is rarely the labels themselves.

He pointed out that these labels are led by respected industry veterans, and once artistes exit, they often lose access to the strong support network they previously enjoyed.

However, D-Black stressed that how an artiste leaves a label matters significantly — the circumstances of the departure can influence their future success.

When asked about the future of Black Avenue Muzik, D-Black firmly stated he has no plans to shut down the label, but acknowledged that the company is shifting its strategy and direction.

He also recounted the departures of notable artistes such as Joey B, Sefa, Dee Moneey, and DJ Breezy from his label, providing insight into their exits.
