- Actor Wayoosi has raised concerns about the heavy use of insults in modern Ghanaian comedy.
- He recalled that in the past, humour relied on creativity and still drew massive audiences.
- Ghanaian films were widely watched even without social media and widespread TV access.
- He believes the overreliance on insults weakens the quality of comedy.
- His comments reignite debate over the current state of the film and comedy industry.
Veteran Kumawood actor Joseph Osei, popularly known as Wayoosi, has voiced his disappointment over the growing trend of insults dominating Ghana’s comedy scene.
According to him, humour once relied on creativity, wit, and storytelling rather than crude language. Reflecting on the past, Wayoosi noted that Ghanaian films used to attract massive audiences despite the absence of social media and limited television access. Yet, people still made time to watch because the content was rich and entertaining.
He contrasted that era with today’s productions, where he believes some filmmakers and comedians resort to insults as the quickest way to make people laugh, undermining the artistry of comedy.
Wayoosi’s remarks add to an ongoing discussion about the direction of Ghana’s film and comedy industry, with many observers questioning whether creativity has been sacrificed for cheap laughs.

Comedy has changed. We used to make people laugh without insults. Now, it feels like that’s all some producers rely on. And you know what? Our movies were still incredibly popular, even without the internet and with limited TV access. People would go out of their way to watch🙏 pic.twitter.com/1Fx9tKbchw
