Apostle Lilian Kumah, Ghanaian preacher and widow of the late Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Ejisu, Dr. John Kumah, has stirred public conversation with her passionate defense of the controversial National Cathedral project.
During a recent church event, she directed sharp criticism toward members of the Christian community who have publicly opposed or questioned the construction of the cathedral. Her comments, made in Twi, reflected frustration over what she described as misplaced outrage among believers.
The preacher emphasized her view that Christians have no justification to criticize the building of a national place of worship dedicated to God, especially when other religious communities are actively constructing their own centers without facing similar backlash. She highlighted the growth in the number of mosques across various parts of the country—particularly in Kumasi—and wondered why that trend has not attracted the same level of scrutiny or criticism.
She also accused fellow Christians of hypocrisy, pointing fingers not only at lay members but also at pastors and church leaders who had initially supported the cathedral project but have since distanced themselves. In her view, the focus on alleged financial improprieties surrounding the project has overshadowed its intended spiritual significance.
Apostle Kumah’s comments have quickly gone viral, reigniting debate around the National Cathedral, which has been championed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a symbol of national faith. Despite its symbolic intentions, the project has been entangled in controversies involving cost overruns, questions of public funding, and concerns over procurement transparency.
While supporters see it as a much-needed religious monument, critics—including civil society organizations and opposition figures—continue to demand answers regarding the project’s management and justification in the face of Ghana’s pressing economic challenges.
