Award-winning Ghanaian actress Gloria Sarfo has drawn attention to the struggles faced by veteran actors in the country’s film industry, calling on producers to improve their pay and welfare. She emphasized that older actors, who helped build the foundation of Ghanaian cinema, are increasingly being sidelined and overlooked.
Sarfo explained that earlier generations of actors often worked without lucrative contracts or appearance fees, dedicating themselves to their craft despite limited financial reward. Many relied on personal resources or family support to sustain their careers. Today, these pioneers face neglect, with fewer opportunities to participate in productions compared to younger performers.
The actress noted that this trend is not seen in neighboring countries, where veteran actors continue to receive regular roles and recognition. She highlighted that the lack of support in Ghana has a negative effect on the industry, dampening motivation and making it difficult to sustain the creative spirit that helped establish the film sector.
Sarfo also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and comfort of older actors during film productions. She urged producers to provide adequate compensation and logistical support, so that veteran actors can continue working without financial or personal hardships.
Her call underscores the need for the Ghanaian movie industry to recognize and support its pioneers, ensuring that those who shaped its beginnings are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
