The High Commission of Ghana in Pretoria has issued an urgent advisory to Ghanaian nationals living in South Africa, citing credible reports of planned nationwide anti-foreigner demonstrations scheduled for Monday, May 4, and Friday, May 8, 2026.

In a statement released today, the High Commission urged Ghanaians to exercise heightened caution as the protests are expected across various parts of the country.

The safety and well-being of all Ghanaian nationals, it said, remain the Commission’s utmost priority.

As part of the precautionary measures, the High Commission strongly advised Ghanaians to avoid public gatherings entirely.

This includes refraining from participating in or even going near protests, demonstrations, or large crowds, with particular emphasis on city centres and areas already identified as hotspots.

The Commission further called on nationals to limit non-essential movement. Where possible, Ghanaians should stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in areas where demonstrations are anticipated.

Beyond restricting movement, the advisory stressed the need for constant vigilance. Ghanaians should remain aware of their surroundings at all times and promptly leave any location that begins to feel unsafe.

In addition, the High Commission emphasized the importance of documentation.

Every Ghanaian national should ensure they carry valid identification and immigration documents at all times, as this could prove critical during police checks or emergencies.

The High Commission noted that it is actively engaging relevant South African authorities to ensure the safety and protection of Ghanaian nationals.

It pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and to provide updates as necessary.

Meanwhile, Ghanaians in South Africa requiring assistance are advised to contact the High Commission through its official channels.
