Ayra Star Makes History with Double Win at 2025 MOBO Awards
Nigerian singer Ayra Star made history at the 2025 MOBO Awards by clinching the Best African Music Act, becoming the first woman in 16 years to win the prestigious accolade.
She triumphed over fellow Nigerian artists Asake and Tems, as well as South Africa’s Tyla, to secure the award. Additionally, Ayra Star claimed the Best International Music Act, outperforming global heavyweights such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, Tems, and Latto.
The awards ceremony, held in Newcastle and hosted by Indiyah Polack and Eddie Kadi, celebrated the finest achievements in Black music and culture.
During her emotional acceptance speech, Ayra Star expressed her disbelief and gratitude, saying, “Okay, this is my first MOBO. And this is the first time I’m winning a MOBO Award—make some noise! I am actually shaking right now. I am actually nervous.”
She went on to thank her supporters, team, producers, and record label, MAVINS, saying, “Thank you so much to everybody who supported me. Thank you to my team—my amazing MOB-STARS. My amazing brothers who make music with me—the producers in the studio—my studio partners in crime; my label—MAVINS record, Embryo, my mummy… Thank you so much. Thank you, MOBOs.”
Ayra Star’s double victory marks a significant milestone in her career and highlights her growing influence in the global music scene.
