The Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboah, has issued a strong warning to chiefs implicated in the illegal mining (galamsey) activities in the region.
His comments followed a visit to several galamsey sites, during which he reaffirmed his commitment to combating the damaging effects of illegal mining.
Akwaboah’s warning is especially notable as some chiefs have been accused of enabling or participating in galamsey operations.
The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has previously criticized the National House of Chiefs for not taking a firm stance against illegal mining, urging them to clarify their position and join efforts to curb the menace.
The minister’s stance is part of a broader initiative to protect Ghana’s natural resources, particularly the country’s rivers, forests, and farmland, which have suffered severe environmental degradation due to galamsey.
By holding traditional leaders accountable, Akwaboah hopes to strengthen the fight against illegal mining and ensure the sustainable use of the country’s resources.
The Minister’s visit and statement come as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining across the country, where traditional leaders play a significant role in regulating local affairs.
