President John Dramani Mahama has directed that all government expenditures on national sports teams, including the Black Stars, be made public.
Addressing Parliament during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, he emphasised that taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being used to fund national teams.
He stated that the days of secrecy surrounding these budgets were over, as accountability must be prioritised in sports administration.
To enforce this, he has tasked his office and the Minister for Sports and Recreation with ensuring that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and other sports bodies are transparent about their financial dealings.
He stressed that all budget proposals submitted by the GFA and other associations should be accessible to the public.
Beyond transparency, Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to reducing wasteful expenditure across all sectors, including sports. He made it clear that fiscal discipline would be enforced to curb unnecessary spending in government-funded sporting activities.
This move signals a shift in how government support for sports will be handled, ensuring greater public oversight in the allocation and use of funds.
