In a recent interview on UTV’s United Showbiz, Brother Sammy, a well-known Ghanaian gospel musician, openly criticized his fellow artist Ohemaa Mercy for her recent decision to divorce her husband based on what she claims was a divine instruction.
Brother Sammy questioned the authenticity of Ohemaa Mercy’s claim, asking why she felt the need to pursue a legal divorce if it was truly God’s will for her to end her marriage.
He suggested that her actions may have been motivated by financial considerations, implying that she sought to ensure her ex-husband would not benefit from any assets she acquired.
He further raised concerns about the impact of her decision on younger ministers and followers in the gospel community.
Brother Sammy argued that if ministers publicly claim divine directives for personal decisions like divorce, it could set a troubling precedent.
This could lead others to justify similar actions by claiming they too have received divine instructions, potentially leading to a wave of divorce claims among those who look up to such figures.
Brother Sammy’s comments have sparked a debate within the gospel community about the intersection of faith and personal decisions, and whether public figures should use their influence to set examples that align with their religious teachings.
“If God instructed you to get a divorce, why did you go to court? She got the divorced because she has gotten money and did not want the ex-husband to enjoy some.
“What will she say to the younger ministers who look up to her, when they come to tell her that they have also heard the voice of God to get a divorce? If we go on that tangent, everybody will then say they have heard clearly from God that they should get a divorce.”
